We are happy to announce that The Outlook Farm is expanding and welcoming the Stage House Inn into the family. Nestled on the corner of Paul and Main Street in South Berwick, ME, the Stage House Inn is located less than a mile away from the Red Barn, making it the perfect destination for guests to lay their heads after a night of wedding festivities. We are thrilled to share its historical charm with the community and travelers alike.

The Stage House Inn has changed hands many times since the 1800s and boasts a colorful history. The building was originally built as the Winthrop family’s private home in 1798.  In 1815 a widow by the name of Sarah Frost purchased the property; Frost had lost her husband at sea and converted the home into a tavern to support her family. Frost hosted stagecoach passengers traveling between Boston and Portland in her tavern; notable visitors included President James Monroe and Revolutionary War General Lafayette.

After Frost’s death in 1848 the building was purchased by Josiah Paul and operated under the name Paul’s Hotel.  Paul had several roles in the community, not only was he the innkeeper at the time but he was also the deputy sheriff and coroner. Sometimes Paul even used the hotel to detain prisoners.

The Parish of St. Michaels purchased the property in 1909 and the hotel became St. Rose’s School, which was run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon, France. By 1920 the Sisters owned the grounds and ran a school where they educated female students and borders until it closed in 1971. Bible Speaks Church occupied the property until it was purchased in 2016 by the Flynn family.

The Stage House Inn was lovingly restored to celebrate this long history and preserved many of the furnishings dating back to the mid-1800s. Visitors will notice that the guest room names pay homage to the Inn’s long history and the surrounding community. The US National Parks Service recognizes the Stage House Inn with a historic designation. Some of the original features include the painted wallpaper in the parlor, the mantles in the guest rooms, tin wall coverings, and the grand staircase.
