Things to Do in Maine
When you think about Maine the first things that come to mind might be lobsters, moose (meese?) and lighthouses. But our little slice of heaven is so much more than that. Maine is one of the top travel destinations in the world (hence the name Vacationland). With its rugged coastline, immense state forests, and extraordinary history, it’s no wonder millions of people visit the state every year.
Hosting a wedding in Maine gives your guests the chance to explore the area we call home. Located in York County, the Red Barn at Outlook Farm is a gateway to the southern Maine seacoast, making it the perfect jumping off point for your next Maine adventure. Some of our favorite activities to do in the area include:
Stay at the Stage House Inn
Dine at Dufour
Play a Round at the Links at Outlook
Mount Agamenticus
Nubble Lighthouse
North Country Hard Cider
York Beaches
Portsmouth, NH
Vaughn Woods
Hamilton House
Stay at the Stage House Inn
Located on the corner of Paul and Main Street in South Berwick, ME, the Stage House Inn is less than a mile away from the Red Barn, making it the perfect spot for guests to lay their heads after a night of wedding festivities. The Inn has 20 guest rooms, a private function space and a restaurant open to the public. We are thrilled to share its historical charm with the community and travelers alike.
Dine at Dufour
Dufour is the restaurant located inside the Stage House Inn. Open to the public and offering inside and outside seating, Dufour is happy to feature menus with fresh, local ingredients. Order a signature craft cocktail or glass of wine and enjoy it on the farmer’s porch overlooking South Berwick’s Main Street.
Golf at the Links at Outlook
Golfers will enjoy many breathtaking views while playing this 18-hole championship course. Sprawling across 140 acres the course features bent grass fairways and greens, rolling dunes, and scattered sand bunkers. Did you know we include 4 complimentary golf passes in our Wedding Packages? Red Barn wedding parties are allowed to make advance tee times up to 30 days prior to the wedding date.
Hike Mount Agamenticus
Organize an outdoor adventure to the peak of Mount Agamenticus. This is a family-friendly mountain is one hikers of all experience levels can enjoy. Many trails lead to the summit, which offers views to Mount Washington and the Isles of Shoals.
Visit Nubble Lighthouse
A historical Insta-worthy treasure located in York, Maine, the Nubble Lighthouse has a rich history of protecting Maine seafarers from the dangerous rocky coast. Visitors can enjoy the view of the light station which sits atop an island just a few hundred feet from shore.
Grab a Drink at North Country Hard Cider
Okay, this one is technically in New Hampshire, but we couldn’t not put North Country on the list. A local favorite, North Country crafts small batch ciders that can be enjoyed on their outside patio overlooking the Salmon Falls River. Located just minutes from the Red Barn, it’s where you’ll find us on a nice summer day after work.
Visit the York Public Beaches
The coast of Maine is located just 25 minutes from the Red Barn, making it easily accessible to visitors looking to enjoy the seaside. Long Sands Beach runs for 2 miles with metered parking available down the scenic Route 1A (you might want to practice your parallel parking skills in advance).
Explore Portsmouth, NH
Yes, this is another New Hampshire entry, but we just love Portsmouth too much to exclude it from the list. The quirky local shops, the nightlife, the waterfront dining, and the colorful history are just a few things that we love about this vibrant port town. Located just 25 minutes from the Red Barn, Portsmouth is a quintessential New England town that will be sure to impress any out of towner.
Walk Through Vaughan Woods
Another option for all of you outdoorsy folks, Vaughan woods is a beautiful trail featuring a river, wildlife, and scenic overlooks. Benches are available throughout the trail to take a breather and soak in that Maine fresh air.
Tour the Hamilton House
For all you history buffs, the Hamilton House is a National Historic Landmark located on the Salmon Falls River in South Berwick, Maine. Visitors can stroll through the gardens or book a private tour of the historic home.
Whether you take us up on one of these suggestions or find something off the beaten path, we are so excited to share the majesty of Maine with you.
